Share
Fat tire electric bikes provide an excellent year-round option for those seeking a reliable and exciting alternative mode of transportation. Whether you're braving the winter chill or cruising summer trails, proper tire pressure and maintenance are key to optimizing performance and ensuring safety. Here’s your season-by-season guide to keeping your 171 Electric Bike in top shape.
Please note that these are recommendations based on 171 Electric’s opinion for our bikes. If you do not own one of our models, we highly recommend consulting a professional bike mechanic to determine what’s best for your electric bike, as not all are made the same.
Winter Riding: Navigating Snow and Ice
Snow Conditions
Winter riding can be exhilarating, but deep snow presents unique challenges. To help your tires become fatter and float over soft surfaces and gain maximum traction, maintain a pressure between 6-7 PSI. If you're riding on hard-packed snow, increasing the pressure to 8-10 PSI enhances speed and efficiency, making your ride smoother and less strenuous.
Icy Conditions
Riding on icy roads demands extra caution. We DO NOT recommend it. ICE is ICE regardless of the vehicle, and you are riding on only 2 tires. If you have the option, install studded tires for added grip. Keep the tire pressure around 6-8 PSI to maintain a balance between traction and control, reducing the risk of slipping.
Springtime Maintenance
With winter behind you, it’s time to prepare your bike for the seasons ahead.
-
Thorough Cleaning: Snow and ice often bring salt and grime that can corrode bike components. Wash your bike thoroughly and lubricate the chain to prevent rust.
-
Tire Inspection: Harsh winter conditions can take a toll on your tires. Check for cracks, embedded debris, or signs of wear that could lead to punctures.
-
Suspension Check: Cold temperatures can affect your bike’s suspension. Ensure it's functioning smoothly and inspect for any stiffness or leaks that need attention.
-
Check Tire Pressure: Tires lose pressure when they have not been ridden and or stored regardless of the season.
Summer Riding: Enjoying the Trails
Trail Conditions
On trails, set your tire pressure between 10-12 PSI to minimize rolling resistance and maximize speed. If you're riding on gravel roads, increase the pressure to 13-15 PSI for better efficiency and handling.
Road Riding
For those who use their fat tire e-bikes in urban settings or on paved roads, a higher tire pressure of 15-20 PSI enhances performance, reducing energy expenditure while improving speed and durability.
Fall Maintenance
As the leaves change color, it’s a great time to prepare for the colder months ahead.
-
Pre-Winter Check: Inspect your brakes, gears, and tires to ensure they are in optimal condition before winter arrives.
-
Lubrication: Apply a heavier lubricant to the drivetrain and other moving parts to withstand the cold and prevent freezing.
-
Battery Care: For electric bike owners, keeping the battery at optimal charge levels and avoiding exposure to extreme temperatures prolongs its lifespan and efficiency.
Additional Tips for Year-Round Riding
-
Accurate Pressure Monitoring: Use a high-quality gauge designed for low pressures (1-15 PSI) to ensure precise measurements and avoid under- or over-inflating your tires.
-
Chain Maintenance: Rubbing alcohol and a rag, to remove the road grime. Then lubricate your chain. We spray our chains with a water repellent lubricant.
By following these seasonal maintenance and tire pressure guidelines, you’ll keep your fat tire e-bike performing at its best all year long. Whether tackling icy trails, exploring summer landscapes, or navigating city streets, proper upkeep ensures a smooth, safe, and enjoyable ride with your 171 Electric Bike.
